Corrosion

Description

Loose paint, bubbling and discolouration of the paint film, especially around body fittings, panel edges and seams.

Cause

1. Insufficient or incorrect preparation of substrate
2. Insufficient film build of primer
3. Incorrect paint system used (this needs to provide adequate protection for the environment it is in)
4. Mechanical damage to surface, or failure to prime drill holes
5. Substrate has dissimilar metals in contact with each other

Prevention

1. Ensure that preparation is of a good standard and removes contamination and corrosion from the substrate
2. Use a suitable paint system at the correct film thicknesses that will give the required degree of protection

Rectification

Strip to bare metal and repaint with a suitable paint system.
